Bio-active Terrariums

Our terrariums come in a range of different sizes, styles and vessels. They are low-maintenance and require minimal care, making them suitable for any skill level.

All of our creations use a custom blend of premium, high-quality substrate mediums. This homemade mix provides excellent drainage and water retention, making it long-lasting and perfect for maintaining a healthy eco-system.

Care Instructions

Terrariums can be self-sustaining providing you find the right balance. When you take your terrarium home, take care to find a good position that will provide a suitable environment for your terrarium to thrive.

We recommend keeping a close eye on your terrarium for the first few weeks to make sure the conditions are suitable...if so, you'll find your terrarium will look after itself!

LIGHTING:

We recommend placing your closed terrarium in a bright spot, where it will receive indirect light (no direct sunlight!). Alternatively, you can use a plant grow light to provide artificial lighting. When initially placing your terrarium in its new home, keep an eye on the light levels as too much light will burn tropical plants and dry out moss quickly. If the light is too low, plants may droop, wilt, become leggy or grow un-evenly. You may need to rotate your terrarium periodically for even light distribution.

WATERING:

The humidity inside an enclosed terrarium will lead to condensation on the glass inside the terrarium. This is often useful as guide to your terrariums watering needs. The drainage layer of LECA is also helpful to observe watering requirements: if you can see moisture in the layer of clayballs, your terrarium will not need watering.

* if there is a LIGHT level of condensation, your terrarium does not need watering: keep monitoring to maintain a happy ecosystem *

*if there is a HIGH level of condensation (ie. glass is foggy or excessive droplets), remove the lid to increase airflow. You may need to absorb excess moisture on glass using a paper towel or microfibre cloth. Put the lid back on and continue to monitor water levels in the days to come*

*if there is NO condensation on the glass, remove the lid and gently touch feel the moss/soil. If it feels dry, lightly spray or mist a small amount of water*

For an open terrarium, spray or mist lightly when soil is dry.

GENERALLY, LESS IS MORE WHEN IT COMES TO WATERING
YOUR TERRARIUM. Don't overdo it!!
If your terrarium is in suitable location, it will need very little care!

We recommend using filtered or rain water when caring for your terrariums

Our routine:

In our home, we have placed our terrariums under artificial lights and in bright, indirect positions like close to windows with sheer curtains. Using rainwater, we very lightly mist our terrariums fortnightly and gently dust the glass for aesthetic purposes. We do not fertilise our terrariums and prune any overgrown plants as needed.
